Banging his head against the wall
[Dirk Jan arrives at the TATA Steel office at 6 p.m.]
Security guard: Stop! You can not enter. You first register [in Hindi].
Dirk Jan thinks: Why don’t they speak proper English here? And they are not very polite. I am in such a bad mood now. I just want to bang my head against the door.

Hi all. My name is Mathan and I'm from India myself. I live with my family in Mumbay. It may seem rude to westerns that many Indians, especially, lower class, don't say please. The reason is that Hindi does not have a word for 'please'. So there is an explanation for it. I hope this explains. Regards,
Indians have a very high focus on following procedures. Dutch a very pragmatic and therefore try to bend the rules a little if it suits them but don't expect that from the average Indian.
Hi. There is one advise I can give to people like Dirk Jan: BE PATIENT. You loose face when you get angry or show that you are upset. India is a country with a so-called neutral culture. Getting angry will be interpreted as a lack of personal control over one's feelings and be viewed as inconsistent with one's high status. See also the book International Management, P. 421 on the difference between affective and neutral cultures. Bye.
